Every disposable shouts a big puff number — 9,500, 18,000 and beyond. But what does the figure really mean, and can you trust it? Here is how puff counts work and how to compare devices honestly.

What puff count means

Puff count is an estimate of how many individual puffs a device can deliver before the e-liquid runs out. It is derived from the tank volume, the power of the coil, and how much liquid each standardised puff vaporises. In short, it is a proxy for capacity.

How the number is calculated

Puff counts come from a lab using a puffing machine set to short, uniform puffs at fixed intervals. Because the test is standardised, the resulting number is consistent between devices — which is exactly what makes it useful for comparison.

The catchThe machine’s puff is often shorter than a real human draw. If your puffs are longer or harder, you will get fewer real puffs than the label — that is expected, not a defect.

Are puff counts accurate?
