Nicotine Strength Explained: Which mg Is Right for You?
Nicotine strength is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — choices when picking a vape. This guide explains what the numbers mean and how to land on a level that feels right for you.
What mg/mL actually means
Nicotine strength is measured in milligrams per millilitre (mg/mL), sometimes shown as a percentage. For example, 20 mg/mL — most disposable vapes like the WALA POP fall within this limit is the same as 2%. The number tells you how much nicotine is in each millilitre of e-liquid — higher numbers deliver a stronger throat hit and more nicotine per puff.
How to choose your level
As a general starting point for adults:
- Lower strength (≈6–12 mg/mL): smoother, gentler throat hit; suits light or occasional users.
- Higher strength (up to 20 mg/mL): stronger hit and more satisfying for heavier former smokers.
- 0 mg (nicotine-free): flavour and ritual without nicotine.
If you find yourself vaping constantly and still not satisfied, the strength may be too low. If you feel lightheaded, jittery or slightly nauseous, it is too high — step down.
Nic salt vs freebase
Strength is not the whole story — the type of nicotine matters too. Nicotine salts feel smoother at higher strengths, while freebase nicotine gives a sharper throat hit. We cover the difference in detail in our nic salt vs freebase guide.
